How to use
- Load your photo, open the Frequency section and click Analyze Image.
- Move the four band sliders (Fine Detail, Mid Detail, Structure and Base Tone) and the Clarity slider while watching the preview.
- Click Apply to commit the result to the image, or Reset to start over, then download.
Frequency separation breaks a picture down by the size of the features in it. Here the image is blurred at three increasing strengths, and the differences between those blurred copies give three detail layers. What remains after the strongest blur is the low-frequency base. The tool names them Fine Detail, Mid Detail, Structure and Base Tone, and each has a gain slider from 0 to 2. A value of 1 leaves the layer as it was, values above 1 emphasize it, and values below 1 reduce it.
Raising Fine Detail makes small textures, such as skin pores or fabric weave, more visible. Lowering it softens them. Mid Detail and Structure affect larger shapes, and Base Tone controls the broad light and color. Clarity is a separate local contrast slider from 0 to 100 that is applied after the layers are recombined.
The preview updates as you move the sliders. Because the decomposition is done once at analysis time, the sliders react quickly.
The preview is calculated on a copy whose longest side is at most 1000 pixels, so the sliders respond quickly. When you click Apply, the same settings are run again on the full-size image, with the blur radii scaled to match, so the result keeps the original resolution. Applying adds a PNG to the history, and you can undo it.
All of the work is done in your browser; the image is not uploaded.
FAQ
What do the four bands mean?
Fine Detail is the smallest features, then Mid Detail, then Structure for larger shapes, and Base Tone for the smooth overall brightness and color.
What does a gain of 1 do?
It keeps that layer unchanged. Only values different from 1 alter the image.
Will the result be smaller than the original?
No. Only the preview uses a copy limited to 1000 pixels on the longest side. Apply processes the full-size image.
What is Clarity?
A local contrast adjustment from 0 to 100 that is applied on top of the band changes.
Does this upload my photo?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
