How to use

  1. Choose Image Upload and select a square image, or choose Text / Emoji and type a letter or emoji.
  2. For text, pick the text color and the background color and check the preview.
  3. Click download to get a ZIP containing all the icon sizes.

The generator has two input modes. In Image Upload mode, you provide a picture, such as a logo. In Text / Emoji mode, the tool draws your text in bold on a 512 pixel square with the text color and background color you choose, which is a quick way to get an icon for a site that has no logo yet.

The ZIP contains five PNG files: favicon-16x16.png, favicon-32x32.png, apple-touch-icon.png (180 by 180), android-chrome-192x192.png and android-chrome-512x512.png. Each is made by scaling your source to a square with high quality smoothing. Since every icon is drawn as a square, start with a square image, or a non-square one will be stretched to fit.

The ZIP does not include an .ico file or a web manifest, so you will need to write the link tags and any manifest yourself. The usual approach is to reference the 16 and 32 pixel files in link tags with rel icon, the 180 pixel file with rel apple-touch-icon, and the 192 and 512 pixel files in a web app manifest.

Everything is generated on canvases in your browser, and your image is not uploaded.

FAQ

Which sizes are in the ZIP?

16x16, 32x32, 180x180 (apple touch icon), 192x192 and 512x512, all as PNG.

Does it make an .ico file?

No. The output is PNG only.

What image should I upload?

A square image. Other shapes are stretched into a square, which distorts them.

Can I use an emoji?

Yes. In Text / Emoji mode you can type an emoji or a letter. How an emoji looks depends on the fonts on your device.

Is my logo uploaded?

No. The icons are rendered in your browser.
