How to use
- Load your photo and open the Restore section. Choose a module: Deconvolve, Distortion or Diffuse.
- Set the sliders for that module, then click Apply Restoration and wait for the processing indicator to finish.
- Check the result, use undo if it looks wrong, or apply another module on top. Then download.
Deconvolve tries to reverse blur. It runs a Richardson-Lucy iteration. Iterations (1 to 20) controls how many passes are run, and Sigma sets the width of the blur it assumes, so small values suit mild blur. More iterations give a stronger effect and take longer. It works best on mild, even blur, and it cannot invent detail that was never recorded.
Distortion corrects lens warping with a Brown-Conrady radial model that uses two coefficients, K1 and K2, each from -0.5 to 0.5. A negative K1 is for barrel distortion, where straight lines bow outward, and a positive K1 is for pincushion distortion. K2 is a secondary term for fine tuning at the edges.
Diffuse is a bilateral filter, which smooths noise while trying to keep edges. Strength (1 to 100) sets how different two colors can be and still be blended, Range (1 to 50) sets how far around each pixel the filter looks, and Iterations (1 to 10) repeats the smoothing.
These are classical image processing algorithms, not a trained model, so there is no model to download. The heavy calculation runs in a Web Worker, a background script loaded from this site, so the page stays responsive. For speed, an image is scaled down so that its longest side is at most 2000 pixels before processing, and the result is a PNG that is added to the history so you can undo it.
Your image stays in the browser throughout and is not uploaded.
FAQ
Is this AI?
No. It uses established algorithms: Richardson-Lucy deconvolution, a Brown-Conrady lens distortion model and a bilateral filter. There is no neural network involved.
Can it fix a very blurry photo?
Only to a limited degree. Deconvolution can sharpen mild blur, but heavy blur or motion blur contains too little information to recover.
Why did my large photo get smaller?
Images are reduced to a maximum of 2000 pixels on the longest side before restoration to keep processing quick.
How do I know which sign of K1 to use?
If straight lines bend outward from the center, try a negative K1. If they bend inward, try a positive one. Adjust until lines look straight.
Is my photo uploaded?
No. The worker runs in your browser and the image is not sent to a server.
