How to use

  1. Type or paste your text into the text box.
  2. Read the counts shown under the box: characters, characters without spaces, words, lines and reading time.
  3. Check the readability score and the top words, then edit your text and watch the numbers change.

The word counter shows live statistics for whatever you put in the text box. It reports the total number of characters, the number of characters once all whitespace is removed, the number of words and the number of lines. Nothing needs to be submitted: the figures update with every keystroke.

Words are found with your browser's built-in word segmentation (Intl.Segmenter), so punctuation is not counted as a word and languages written without spaces, such as Chinese, Japanese or Thai, are split into individual words. Lines are counted by splitting on line breaks, and an empty box counts as zero lines. Sentences are found by splitting on full stops, exclamation marks and question marks (including 。!?); they are used only for the readability score.

Reading time is estimated at 200 words per minute and rounded up to the next whole minute. It is a rough guide for typical silent reading, not a measurement of any particular reader.

The readability score is a simple 0 to 100 figure based on average sentence length and average word length. A score of 70 or more is labelled Easy, 50 to 69 is Normal, and anything lower is Hard. It is a quick indicator for English prose rather than a formal grading, so treat it as a hint when you are trimming long sentences.

The top words list shows the five most frequent words. English words need three or more letters, and a built-in list of common English words such as the, and, with and for is skipped. Words in other scripts, such as Korean, Chinese or Japanese, are counted at any length. Numbers on their own are ignored.

The tool runs in your browser. The text is processed on your device and is not uploaded anywhere.

FAQ

How does the tool count words?

It uses your browser's word segmentation, which knows where words begin and end in most languages, including ones written without spaces. Punctuation on its own is not counted.

How is reading time calculated?

The word count is divided by 200 words per minute and rounded up to the next minute. It is an estimate only.

Why are my top words missing some terms?

English words shorter than three letters and a set of common English words are skipped, and numbers on their own are ignored. Words in other scripts are counted at any length.

Is my text sent to a server?

No. The counts are calculated in your browser and the text is not uploaded.
